Hard Work Pays Off - VBG/VBC Alumni

Kyle Bond - Washington and Lee University

I had just finished the most grueling university men’s basketball practice that I had ever had. Something seemed so familiar. I was having a flashback to the summer before high school.

Being awakened from a sound asleep, I heard my mom’s voice. “Go climb into the car, Kyle. Take your pillow and go back to sleep.” It was 4:15am and my mom was going to drive me, and my friend who was sleeping over, Misha, to basketball “boot camp”.

It was another day of A.T.’s boot camp; and it was so much of a routine that I sleep walked to the car. The next thing I was consciously aware of was the cool dew-damp grass upon my weary bones as I lay next to the track to stretch. It was 4:55am. My dozen partners, girls and boys, trickled in and took their various places around the track and also began to stretch.

For most of the summer between 8th and 9th grade, this was the very early beginning of my day. This was the start of the most grueling workout I’d ever done, day after day, week after week. We started by running a mile. This was followed by sprints which were followed by a grueling workout, mostly game-speed drills, on the outdoor courts next to the track - off the ball, on the ball, offensive moves, defensive play, shooting, teammate support… the list goes on and on. With a dozen kids participating in this boot camp, I wondered how A.T. kept every single one of us in motion at all times.

The sun began to rise somewhere in there, and the world slowly began to wake up. We went to the most formidable hill you’ve ever seen. We sprinted up this hill not only forward, but also backward, not once but multiple times. This was followed by another grueling workout on the courts, sprinkled with a little stadium steps running, if we were not the best of community members, and finally scrimmaging and stretching. It was 9am and I marveled over the completion of yet another boot camp morning. I felt excessively weary but invigorated. I looked forward to the remaining day. A.T. reminded us of the importance of supporting our teammates, and of the importance of eating nutritionally. He assigned a book to read and report on, needless to say, expounding on the virtues of hard work and being a good community member. At the end of this summer, I was in the best shape I’d ever been in; my game had never improved more in a 3 month period; and I became a better community member. A.T. was there for us.

Becoming a better community member, in addition to a stronger athlete, was a huge byproduct of working with A.T. Through A.T.’s guidance I became more responsible. Your teammates depend on you. I became more of a team member. Your teammates need your support in order to allow them to become all that they can be. I learned to persevere. Most workouts were at the edge of my grasp, but I learned to control my frustration and look positively upon the situation. I learned that I could have an incredible work ethic. I worked nearly as hard as was possible for me. I learned that life isn’t all about winning. There are lessons in all experiences. I learned to be respectful. Teammates and opponents are important members of the community and deserve respect. The more I learned the more hungry I became. These were not merely lessons in basketball, but lessons in life.

When I was in elementary school, I was on the cusp of not being good enough to play basketball on highly competitive teams. I was in need of having a guiding light.

I worked with A.T. starting in 8th grade and continued through the rest of high school. My athletic abilities improved with every workout. Through my high school years, I was the starting point guard on a private school team, Brimmer and May School, which made it to the New England championship game every year and won the championship several years. Over my high school years, under the direction of A.T., I became a strong athlete and better community member.

I have continued by playing basketball at Washington and Lee University where I am a sophomore. I credit my ability to play basketball to opening the doors to one of the top academic liberal arts colleges in the United States.

A VBG Letter Appreciation Story - Nijal Hamberg
by Ramon Garcia posted 07/27/2010

                                      Nijal Hamberg, Lunenburg, Ma

This VBG student Nijal Hamberg, has been one of the most dedicated Complete Players this summer. Just rescently graduated from the 8th grade at the Turkey Hill Middle School in Lunenburg, Ma. He has made a tremendous jump this summer and plans on taking his talents to the Lunenburg High School. We at VBG feel Nijal will make an immediate impact in the High School level. Be in the look out for this name for future stories to come. Great Job Nijal, from the VBG Team and congratulations on such a hard working summer.

Here is a great testomonial from the Hamberg Family:

Dear Anthony,

My son Nijal Hamberg has attended many of Visionary Basketballs sessions including playing for the A.A.U Team.   He has enjoyed your Sunday Shooting Camp and loves the summer sessions at St. Joes for the complete player, which he attends 3 days a week from 9am to 3pm.   We drive an hour from Lunenburg but I have found that driving to Haverhill has been worth the trip and I wanted to share with you how much Nijal has improved.

First of all Nijal loves the classes and the individual attention you and your coaches JT, Chris & Ramon have given him on improving his ball handling and shooting ability.

Nijal plays on a variety of basketball teams from school, travel to AAU and we came to Visionary Basketball Group with the hopes of improving his shooting accuracy and to increase his aggressiveness.

Since we started working with VBG Nijals basketball game has gradually been improving.  In the past season Nijal would average 8 to 12 points per game.   One of his last tournaments with the Lunenburg Travel Team was played in the March Madness Tournament at Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Fitchburg, and all the boys did really well but I have to tell you this last game was Nijal’s best game ever with 24 Points, multiple rebounds and assist.  Final score Clinton 47 Lunenburg 65.

I feel Nijals time at VBG has improved his overall basketball skills and self confidence we have noticed a steady increase in his points per game and he has become much more aggressive in the game, it’s a visual difference.  Thanks you for your time and devotion to the game we both look forward to his future with you and your team at Visionary Basketball Group.

Thank you

JoAnne & Nijal Hamberg
